    Getting started editing a site

I'm new to EW and want to make sure I am following the correct procedure.  I've read quite a few tutorials, appreciate all the work you've all done creating them.

It seems like the correct procedure is to open EW, go to Open Site, and type in the URL.  Then I should re-calulate the links? and then publish to my hard drive, to a web location that I've previously created on my hard drive.

Once I've done this, can I just open that local web, make my changes, and then publish to the server?  Is there anything else I need to do first? Especially regarding the DWT, are those connections already established when I publish to my hard drive?

     Thanks

No need to recalclate before you publish down. If you start with a copy of your local site you might want to recaclulate there first.

To make sure that your DWTs work correctly make sure you have checked "enable meta data" under Site > Site Settings > General Tab..

    OK thanks.

So then once I've got the local copy, I am ready to use the Publish function to upload to the server any changes that I make?

    Thanks

How come you are getting your site from the server?
Which editor did you use before?
Do you have fpse enabled on the server?
Does the old site have webbots?

How come your getting your site from the server?
A friend wants me to work on her site, and she does not have the original files.

Which editor did you use before?
I believe they used Dreamweaver.  The site was built from a template that they purchased.

Do you have fpse enabled on the server?
I do not know yet.  I'm assuming not.  Are the FP server extensions necessary for EW?

Does the old site have webbots?
I guess not, since that is just a FP feature I believe.

I read both of those yesterday.  Very informative, thank you for creating them.  I've not implemented all the steps detailed there yet.

If they used Dreamweaver simply FTP from the remote site to your local site. Your can create a new empty site locally the File > Publish to connect to the live server.

I'd prefer to use http at least initally, that is what I'm used to.

Will the host need to have FP extensions installed for me to do that with EW?  I seem to remember a tutorial that said that, but it seems odd since MS is phasing out FP.

    Thanks

Nothing requires FPSE and you can't add new FPSE run time bots in Expression Web with the exception of the forms processing and that will most likely go away.

To get the most of out Expression Web at this time you will need ASP.NET 2.0 but not the FPSE. In future versions PHP support will be added as well.

Now I'm confused.  In the any-expression tip #16, which I believe is from Tina, it says:

Tip 16 - Publishing your site from the server to your hard drive with\
    HTTP

Opening your site live on the server
Make sure you have FrontPage Server extensions enabled on your host..........................

Also above in this thread Tina asked me if FPSE were enabled.

    Can you clarify?

    Thanks

Re: Getting started editing a site

Tina uses http (FPSE) publishing while i use FTP. Neither is right or wrong just a matter of preference. If you have the FPSEavailable there is one benefit ot using them - Expression Web remember your userid/password for http publishing but not FTP. Something that should be remedied in the next version.

I plan to go to http://mysite with EW and open the site, then save it on my hard drive.  Then I plan to publish it, using the same address, using the publish function in EW.

Will I need FPSE installed on the server, and if so, which of these two processes is it required for?

    Thanks

    Hi Vincenzo

The tips are just that tips about how to do particular things.. that tip is about http.

Since the site was done originally in dw you will be using FTP this might help. How to open a web site live on the server with Expression Web using FTP

You don't need fpse if you don't use any of the bots (Design Time Includes (formerly known as a FrontPage Includes) being the exception)

OK I think I'm getting it now.

I've always published via http, and that was all I was familiar with, and I assumed that was how most people did it. But it looks like I need to change my thinking.

Is it correct that with EW the "preferred" or default method to load a site into the program, and later to publish it, is with ftp://mysite.com?  (Assuming here that the site has no other need for FPSE.)

     Thanks

Re: Getting started editing a site

FTP is the standard method of publishing while http publishing requires the FPSE.

With FTP publishing you may end up in a directory above your webroot  so check with the host in case you need to use something like the public_html or root folder.
